The first annual celebration of a minor Sonic the Hedgehog character has been branded "an overwhelming success" according to people on the world wide web.

'Ray Day', as it was promoted, was an event dedicated to cult character Ray, the adorable-yet-forgotten yellow flying squirrel from a well-known Sega video game franchise.

He first appeared in the SegaSonic the Hedgehog arcade game, with his cheeky-chappy grin and ability to glide providing a unique gameplay experience to the beloved series. However, he mysteriously disappeared while other undeserving characters like Tails appeared in multiple games during the franchise's heyday of 1991 to 1994.

Many in attendance praised the event, with journalists saying it would bring fresh popularity to a character that was recently described as "the most underrated video game character in history".

One Scottish viewer claimed "it was the greatest three-and-a-half-hours of my life, and I once watched The Terminator three times in a row".

There are unconfirmed reports that representatives from Sega were in attendance, and were said to be scribbling furiously at the positive reaction that Ray the Flying Squirrel received.

The host of the event, Robert Douglas, was praised for an enjoyable and informative experience by those who were unfamiliar with the squirrel. He was able to complete Sonic Mania, collecting all seven chaos emeralds, and was said to have been extremely happy with the turn-out.

He credited the 'Ray Run' for achieving his highest viewing audience ever, acknowledging, "The people came for Ray, what more can I say, other than today was Ray Day and you can be sure that little scamp is here to stay!"
