A video game streaming channel has been accused of harbouring unjustified hostility towards a popular video game character.
Rebecca Chambers, the fan favourite of the early Resident Evil games, has suffered multiple injuries and avoidable deaths at the hands of an internet user known for her love of coffee.
During her playthrough of Resident Evil Remake, Rebecca — an unarmed and inexperienced medic on her first day of the job — was cornered by a ferocious creature known as a Hunter.
It is customary for the player to be alerted to her screams and venture desperately through the mansion in order to save her. Instead, the gamer chose to go the wrong way for upwards of fifteen minutes. It became apparent to the viewers that she had no intention of saving the character, purposely avoiding the door she needed to go through.
The streamer eventually navigated to Rebecca’s location, where the young character’s body was discovered mauled to death. Her indifference to the young character’s death lead to many viewers feeling “sickened and appalled”.
This was not the first time the streamer had committed such an act. During her streams of the original game, the coffee drinker alleged she did not hear Rebecca’s cries for help, choosing instead to complete the game whilst complaining about Chris’s limited inventory space.
Ironically, if she had saved Rebecca, then she would have had a source of healing. This would have reduced the need to carry as much herbage, freeing up an item slot for essential equipment like keys or the fifty or sixty ink ribbons used during the game.
Rebecca Chambers was upgraded to main character status in Resident Evil 0. Fans of the streamer were hopeful that the streamer's attitude to the young woman would change while playing this game. Unsurprisingly, it seemed her dislike of Rebecca was greater than ever.
At one point in the game, Rebecca fell down a hole and it was left to the handsome partner character to save her. Coffee made the bizarre decision fetch an irrelevant item from the furthest corner of the map. She cared little to hide her frustration at Rebecca’s desperate cries over the radio, blaming Rebecca each time one of the rabid chimps attacked Billy.
Eventually, Rebecca fell to her death in what one viewer described as the most “harrowing thing I have ever seen on the internet”. Another feared he would “hear her final shriek in my dreams for days”.
With complete lack of empathy, the caffeine-fueled streamer resorted to victim blaming, stating that instead of radioing for help with her free hand, the character should have been using it to pull herself to safety instead.
When asked to comment on the situation, a spokeswoman for Capcom stated “we haven’t put Rebecca Chambers in a video game for over twenty years, we honestly don’t care.”
